Cipriani Halloween Party – London Phone Box

www.stilettosandsubstance.com

I got my inspiration to dress up as a ‘London Telephone Box’ thanks to an early inspiration initiated by a big poster of a London double decker bus that is plastered above my bed. The red color palette idea was decided on but then I didn’t want to be a red bus for Halloween. So I went on to think of other things that are red and decided to become London telephone box. Consulting your creative mind light heartedly and colorfully can somehow put together some exciting creative solutions 😉

How I did it was by looking for a shiny red base (dress), which I religiously searched for on the web and of coarse in the end found it at non other than Asos.com. No surprise there, Asos will happen to have a red patent dress just because. Next I was going to create little phone box windows which I did using aluminum tape and white border tape. The telephone sign (with the correct font) and the Queen’s crown were mandatory.

The headpiece and wire necklace accessorizing was an easy last minute combination of Amazon Prime orders, hot glue, and lots of hair pins and insulators. Schiaparelli created the shoe hat and I today was going to have a red phone projecting whimsically and happily off my head.

We headed to the Halloween Party at Cipriani on 42nd street where Italian Dj Marco Carola was going to take our eardrums on an electrifying musical journey, and he did quite that!

Till next time Halloween

Xoxo

Halloween part 1 – Frida Kahlo

stilettosandsubstance.com

This year I made the exciting decision to dress up twice for Halloween. With that thought I adopted Frida Kahlo to be my first costume attempt.

My real fascination with Frida Kahlo began after I watched Salma Hayek’s depiction of her life at which point my empathetic heartstrings drew me to immediately fall in love with her and finally understand her strange paintings. That movie also became my all time favorite movie (ever).

I put into use my DIY craftsmanship and made a headpiece of warm colored florals, and tried to draw in my eyebrow ultra strong with self-permission to veto the unibrow.

Chelsea Highline

IMG_3490edited1

This week’s post was taken on-the-go on a walking self tour towards Chelsea and the Highline. It was a beautiful day and my family came to visit me in New York City. The photographer is one of my favorites – Mummy.

Nostalgia – a wistful desire to return in thought or fact to a former place or time. Walking past the beautiful wall art and inspirational words evoking future dreams initiated by childhood innocence was worth capturing and definitely brings me back as I walk by it with my loved ones.

I am wearing my new metallic oxford shoes from Vince Camuto. My outfit consisted of a vintage yellow floral printed button up oversized top paired with my favorite red, waxed Hudson Jeans. I accessorized with both my new prescription wide framed glasses and my new unconventional black sunnies that I purchased from 5 points on a recent trip to Atlanta Georgia. Lastly i am rocking a light weight grey jacket that i bought a while back from Reiss.

I love this photo because it visually captures the essence of the fast paced on-the-go energy of New York City with the echoing mentality that “my time is very precious and I want to make this my decade”.

Along the highline I come across this mural with a sentence written in Arabic with the English translation below “ This book belongs to its owner Fathallah Saad. He bought it with his own money at the beginning of March 1892”. I didn’t understand what it was about, but im sure there’s a story. I wonder what book he bought.

Ice lollies on a sunny pre fall day seem like a good reward after a two hour exploratory walk starting on the east of the island all the way to the Chelsea vicinity and ending up on the highline. Mint cucumber and mango passion fruit- home-made organic and delightful.

A very cool mural placed above a parking garage. Possible thought of a name for it..”The Road to nowhere” aha.

Here my mother the photographer captures my outfit in different settings along the highline. The beauty of this post is its organic feel , the family ambience and our experimenting with visual inspirational settings that came along the way.

Get Carried Away

stilettosandsubstance.com

With New York Fashion Week only a few days away, I took it upon myself to get inspired and challenge my wardrobe. I attempted to pull my own version of the “Carrie Bradshaw” by putting together pieces that I would not naturally gravitate towards pairing together, but somehow just come together in an unconventional manner.

I am wearing a mustard heavy weight metallic Gilet with puffy sleeves. I pair it in an alternative manner with a cream pleated high waist A-line skirt and suede peep-toe booties creating an effortless easy day or night-out-in-town look.

The luminous metallic fabric of the Gilet definitely makes it the statement piece and ideal to pair with my ethnic ‘Lapiz Lazuli’, semi-precious, blue stone necklace from Afghanistan. The vibrant colors all compliment each other dreamily in addition to the pop of scarlet red lipstick – Mac’s renowned “Ruby Woo”. I finish off the look with a straw weaved messenger bag to play off the semi organic feel of the look.

A New Perspective

stilettosandsubstance.comThis week’s style post highlights the idea of mixing and matching your previously owned fashion pieces. Dedicating a few extra minutes to our daily outfit choosing routine can go a long way resulting in fun new outfit combos. We all have that specific top and pants that we religiously pair together that we now can approach with a fresh new styling perspective.

Here I am rocking a grey peter pan collared button up top that I purchased from Asos a while back. I am pairing it alternatively with silky harem black and beige striped pants from American Apparel. This new outfit combo created a new day-to-night look mostly with the addition of the harem pants to a top that I usually wear with my black high waisted skinny pants as corporate attire.

With a neutral toned outfit there’s nothing better than to compliment it by adding a pop of colorful accessorizing. I accessorize the neutral grays and yellows with a scarlet red statement shoe by Marc by Marc. The statement show consists of golden buttons and chunky gold and red striped heel, which is my favorite element of the shoe.

I accessorize adventurously by layering many necklaces of different textures, lengths and shades for no reason whatsoever. Lastly I throw on my trademark Marc by Marc “clearly” bag, which has a vinyl panel on the front exposing the inner leather compartments of the bag. There’s an element of excitement that comes with rocking vinyl clear bags and exposing the inner workings of your life– an amusement i attained at a very early age ever since my first clear vinyl backpack with the legendary purple zippers… in Kindergarten.

The Skies Collection

www.stilettosandsubstance.com

This week’s post celebrates one of my favorite hobbies as a cloud enthusiast- sky watching. Cumulus, Stratocumulus, Cumulonimbus and the list continues. The sky has an art of its own and it is rather stimulating to deviate from out daily tasks to give nature’s gigantic cotton balls some undivided attention and appreciation. “ London based Designer Kirsteen Stewart shares my enthusiasm for clouds in her latest “Skies Collection”.

Kirsteen had created rich graphic prints for the “Skies Collection” from pictures she had taken herself of the Scottish skies at sunrise and sunset. She designed a series of structured dresses to flatter the female form. Here I am rocking the Nimbus Dress with a bold monochrome print of the Scottish skies as rain clouds begin to build on the horizon. I styled the Nimbus dress with the Cloud Pendant – also designed by Kirsteen, to play off the theme. The cloud necklace is my latest accessory amusement and had proved to be a very good conversation starter in many of my outings! I finish off my look with a scooped high bun and suede, leather, bow-string court shoes from Zara.

My lovely accomplice Arianna Miskel is rocking the Floccus Dress with a bold print inspired by the Scottish sunset. She accessorizes with the silver Mini Smile Necklace also designed by Kirsteen Stewart. Arianna finishes off the look with the Obsessive Compulsive Lip Tar, Sephora’s latest long lasting lippy.

Commune and Memoir

Editlesslight_IMG_9381 BW2 StilettosandSubstance.com

In celebration of the 4th of July I am excited to feature a special brand that I recently got exposed to called “Commune and Memoir“. Commune and Memoir celebrate New York City’s energy with quirky one- word adjectives printed on Tees, a simple and exciting genius concept with the trademark hashtag #NYCinaWord. Their concept is to elevate the city as a work of art that the public can observe with curated words as an alternative to images.

Accompanied by one of my NYC besties, the lovely Jeff Thompson we decide to commune and memoir NYC along the Brooklyn Bridge rocking our “Commune and Memoir” Tees.

I am rocking the “Galvanic” Tee, a word that comes from the French word galvanique – to have the effect of an electric shock! I pair my Galvanic Tee with a transparent black PVC skirt from American Apparel. The beauty of this transparent skirt is that it comes with the best criteria – get creative. One could ultimately wear this PVC skirt over many fun pieces – including shorts, a flared dress or a polka dot bodycon skirt! Here I am wearing it over a black bodycon skirt to keep it simple when pairing with my galvanic Tee. This outfit combo is my select for summer music festival attire – statement, unconventional and energetic.

Jeff is rocking the “Inexhaustible” V-neck Tee – a word from Latin inexhaust – incapable of being used up and carries the word’s energy seamlessly. He styles the Tee with black suspenders, a pair of black fitted jeans, and  black leather moccasins from Sandro.

Here we photograph by a recent New York City attraction- the mysterious abandoned cordless wooden piano lying on the shore underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. Some say it got washed into shore, some say it may have fell from a truck driving across the bridge. Along with many others, I am taken by the randomness of this beautiful instrument and amused about the whole scenario hence decided to note its memorable existence.

“Commune and Memoir” definitely capture New York City’s essence with their memorable one-word descriptions. Fellow NYC tourists can definitely use an upgrade from the “I heart NYC” Tees. Some of their other words that tell the story of New York City include; Spectral, Idyllic, Fervent and Elusive.
