Commune and Memoir

In celebration of the 4th of July I am excited to feature a special brand that I recently got exposed to called “Commune and Memoir“. Commune and Memoir celebrate New York City’s energy with quirky one- word adjectives printed on Tees, a simple and exciting genius concept with the trademark hashtag #NYCinaWord. Their concept is to elevate the city as a work of art that the public can observe with curated words as an alternative to images.

Accompanied by one of my NYC besties, the lovely Jeff Thompson we decide to commune and memoir NYC along the Brooklyn Bridge rocking our “Commune and Memoir” Tees.

I am rocking the “Galvanic” Tee, a word that comes from the French word galvanique – to have the effect of an electric shock! I pair my Galvanic Tee with a transparent black PVC skirt from American Apparel. The beauty of this transparent skirt is that it comes with the best criteria – get creative. One could ultimately wear this PVC skirt over many fun pieces – including shorts, a flared dress or a polka dot bodycon skirt! Here I am wearing it over a black bodycon skirt to keep it simple when pairing with my galvanic Tee. This outfit combo is my select for summer music festival attire – statement, unconventional and energetic.

Jeff is rocking the “Inexhaustible” V-neck Tee – a word from Latin inexhaust – incapable of being used up and carries the word’s energy seamlessly. He styles the Tee with black suspenders, a pair of black fitted jeans, and  black leather moccasins from Sandro.

Here we photograph by a recent New York City attraction- the mysterious abandoned cordless wooden piano lying on the shore underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. Some say it got washed into shore, some say it may have fell from a truck driving across the bridge. Along with many others, I am taken by the randomness of this beautiful instrument and amused about the whole scenario hence decided to note its memorable existence.

“Commune and Memoir” definitely capture New York City’s essence with their memorable one-word descriptions. Fellow NYC tourists can definitely use an upgrade from the “I heart NYC” Tees. Some of their other words that tell the story of New York City include; Spectral, Idyllic, Fervent and Elusive.

With spring-cleaning, a lot of hidden treasures reveal themselves. When I come visit my mother in Abu Dhabi, I get the pleasure of rummaging through her closet and incorporating some of her pieces with my own to create interesting outfit combinations. Here I am rocking a Donald Duck and Daisy Duck Oversized shirt that she purchased from boutique in Switzerland many years back. It comes back to life as I pair it with my camel harem pants from Vince for an effortless breezy spring/summer attire.

The humidity makes it difficult to have non frizzy hair, instead surrendering to the fizziness and maintaining the curls using Miss Jessie’s Pillow soft curls styling lotion may yield affirmative results. Here I rock my frizz in a low ponytail and a loosely parted fringe.

I finished off my outfit by accessorizing lightly with black striped shades by Fendi and pointed black flats by Charles and Keith.

Beside The Seaside

Nothing evokes the carefree childhood memories of summer quite like a day at the beach. Back when we spent our carefree summer afternoons by the sea being sandcastle architects and ice cream connoisseurs, our style choices were the last thing on our minds. As summer quickly comes to a close, channel that youthful nonchalance of yesteryear by sporting a fun childhood inspired ensemble.

Aside from triggering a rush of 90’s nostalgia, denim overalls have made a major fashion comeback this year. The surprisingly versatile and wearable Osh Kosh throwback can be dressed up or down depending on how you choose to style it.

Here, pair of light denim short overalls are paired with a colourful rose print T-shirt for a super-casual take on the trend. To avoid looking too dated, wear this one-piece unbuttoned on one side for an undone and modern feel.

The beauty of a super-casual look like this lies in simplicity and ease. A quirky scissor necklace, a bright pair of square retro shades, and crisp white Adidas sneakers are all that’s needed to top off this carefree summertime beach outfit.
