Halloween part 1 – Frida Kahlo

stilettosandsubstance.com

This year I made the exciting decision to dress up twice for Halloween. With that thought I adopted Frida Kahlo to be my first costume attempt.

My real fascination with Frida Kahlo began after I watched Salma Hayek’s depiction of her life at which point my empathetic heartstrings drew me to immediately fall in love with her and finally understand her strange paintings. That movie also became my all time favorite movie (ever).

I put into use my DIY craftsmanship and made a headpiece of warm colored florals, and tried to draw in my eyebrow ultra strong with self-permission to veto the unibrow.

Shift Dress Ready

Stilettosandsubstance.com

This week features a day-to-night-look. A simple outfit of the day that can be carried forth to summer night-time endeavors.

I am wearing a purple v-neck kimono-sleeved shift dress from Asos. This piece is an easy comfortable throw on and constitutes a silhouette that is flattering to many different female forms. I accessorize with a chunky necklace that put together a few years back. I bought the fluffy wool pendant from a jewelry booth during London Fashion Weekend and found beads to pair it with from the Boston bead factory.

Simplicity is the key with this look as the dress color is the main visual stimulant. The remaining accessorizing process is remained at a minimal with white a white leather Messenger from Ted Baker and white wedges from Kurt Geiger.

The Skies Collection

www.stilettosandsubstance.com

This week’s post celebrates one of my favorite hobbies as a cloud enthusiast- sky watching. Cumulus, Stratocumulus, Cumulonimbus and the list continues. The sky has an art of its own and it is rather stimulating to deviate from out daily tasks to give nature’s gigantic cotton balls some undivided attention and appreciation. “ London based Designer Kirsteen Stewart shares my enthusiasm for clouds in her latest “Skies Collection”.

Kirsteen had created rich graphic prints for the “Skies Collection” from pictures she had taken herself of the Scottish skies at sunrise and sunset. She designed a series of structured dresses to flatter the female form. Here I am rocking the Nimbus Dress with a bold monochrome print of the Scottish skies as rain clouds begin to build on the horizon. I styled the Nimbus dress with the Cloud Pendant – also designed by Kirsteen, to play off the theme. The cloud necklace is my latest accessory amusement and had proved to be a very good conversation starter in many of my outings! I finish off my look with a scooped high bun and suede, leather, bow-string court shoes from Zara.

My lovely accomplice Arianna Miskel is rocking the Floccus Dress with a bold print inspired by the Scottish sunset. She accessorizes with the silver Mini Smile Necklace also designed by Kirsteen Stewart. Arianna finishes off the look with the Obsessive Compulsive Lip Tar, Sephora’s latest long lasting lippy.

WORK . PLAY

www.stilettosandsubstance.comA girl could never have enough white tops. In a closet of my dreams I would have endless amounts of white tops in designated sections labeled according to style, cut and fabric weight! Until then I continue to build my white top collection slowly but surely. A week ago I came across a boutique owner called Coco who introduced me to this attractive white top with embroidered sleeve net detailing that she carries in her online boutique Coco London Brooklyn. Coco’s philosophy is “ Style shouldn’t break the bank.” Yes…Amen Coco!

Here I pair the embroidered Fish Net Trim Top with a fitted pair of Checked Navy “Slacks” (I am amused by recently having learnt this word). These slacks are ideally lightweight and equally stylish for the Manhattan summer work attire followed by post work happy hour rendezvous.

I accessorize with my new favorite nude sandals from Zara. They manage to just pull everything together in an effortless manner. I like to think I’m the only one who has them.

The last accents of accessories include half-baked sunglasses by YSL, a violet patent bow satchel by Zac by Zac Posen, and a Crystal Necklace by Coast.

Chunky Delicacies

www.stilettosandsubstance.com

Over the past two weeks I came across two eye-catching neutral-toned statement necklace pieces that I thought needed to be photographed together in a duet styled summer shoot. Hence this lovely weekend pre-beach/brunch duet shoot by the pier in Dubai with one of my childhood besties Ines Gameiro.

Here I am wearing a clear crystal floral chunky necklace by Coast that I styled with a simple yet fun layered summer outfit. I layered a nude pink, leveled waistcoat with a zipper trim from Designer Circus over a pleated collar white sleeveless top from H&M. I finished off the look with loose fitting denim shorts and brown structured sunnies by Cole Haan.

Ines is rocking an exquisite feminine floral delicacy from a jewelry line I recently learnt about and quickly treasured – Lenora Dame. This Necklace was composed of grey and brown pastel flowers in combination with pearls, crystals and ribbon. Ines wears the Lenora Dame necklace effortlessly with a simple cheerful little white dress, and accessorizes with bold sunglasses by Michael Kors. Both of us are wearing the same shade of pink lipstick by Mac (up the amp) that fantastically composes a complementing distinctive shade on varying skin tones.

Personal Style: Birthday Post!

www.stilettosandsubstance.com

Aside from being fabulously decadent occasions when self-indulgence is totally permissible, birthdays are also the perfect excuse to play dress up. Your twenties present the perfect opportunity to showcase your personal style and get away with almost anything, so have fun creating a memorable and unique birthday look for the one day in the year that is guaranteed to be all about you!

The leather material and fashion-forward cut of this black Theory dress put an edgy, irreverent spin on the timeless Little Black Dress. The beauty of a classic piece such the LBD lies in its versatility; you can create different looks depending on how you choose to accessorize it. Whether you pile on the jewels for an OTT look or utilize the power of a single statement piece, the styling possibilities are virtually endless. Here, an oversized white floral statement necklace is the only accessory added to the look. The femininity of the  Chanel-inspired piece juxtaposes with the tough feel of the dress for an ultramodern feel.

Finally, strategic pops of bright colour were added to elevate the black and white colour palette of this outfit and keep the look summer ready. Suede lime heels add a bright burst of colour and textural contrast, and the bright colours on the lips and nails keep this look young and fresh.

Personal Style: Reinvention of the LBD

www.stilettosandsubstance.com

The little black dress is a style staple that has been around forever, and for good reason. The style merits of this highly versatile wardrobe essential are endless; it is a piece that can look good on virtually anyone, and it can be transformed instantly with the help of the right styling. Here, a variety of statement pieces were used to create a look that is both chic and youthful.

When it comes to style basics like the LBD, the cut and fit is of paramount importance. This Ted Baker babydoll dress has a superior fit, and has a figure flattering fit-and-flare silhouette that is fitted on top and flared out into a pleated skirt. Its mid-thigh length elongates the leg, and the zipper detail in the back gives it some edge.

The brown and black tights give this look some visual interest by putting an unconventional colour spin on the classic houndstooth print. When it came to accessories, the ladylike look of this outfit called for the addition of something a little more unexpected to keep things interesting and unique. The Perspex neon-orange necklace is the perfect choice as it adds unexpected colour and texture and also channels this season’s futuristic trend.

The outwear you select to layer over your LBD can make or break your look, especially in the colder months. The unusual arm cutouts on this fur cape give it an elegant vintage feel that adds a luxe element to the rest of the look. A royal blue bow belt was added to cinch in the waist and give a fun pop of colour to the outfits predominantly neutral colour palette, the gloves co-ordinate with the earth tones of the outfit, and the classic black pumps echo the black of the dress and keep things simple.
