Kimonos and Stament Clutches

www.stilettosandsubstance.comOne of the staple fun pieces to style with during summer is the kimono. While some of us feel they are slightly adventurous to pull off they are actually an easy, fun, transitional piece to throw on over any basic summer attire. Here I am rocking an open-work beige Kimono that I absolutely fell head-over-heels for whilst browsing through the isles of the H&M conscious collection. I have it thrown over a red silk 20’s era reminiscent shift dress that I bought from Reiss a few years back.

To complete the look, i have incorporated another Asian inspired element as I accessorize with a statement metal handcrafted bag from Tibet. The Tibet bag is available at the lovely online Brooklyn based boutique Coco London Brooklyn. The ethnic handcraft detailing of this bag is immaculate and I am particularly in love with the plush violet interior that adds a fun element of surprise.

Grandma Chic

www.stilettosandsubstance.comHere I decided to do a style post where I create an outfit from bits and pieces of items that I already own – an exercise we sometimes get lazy to preform. However when doing so, we ultimately uncover hidden gems we already own in our closets.

I am wearing a vintage dress that I bought a year ago from a store in Boston called the Garment District. It is a 50’s era pastel floral printed long sleeved A-line midi. I decided to give the dress a little twist when styling to make it more attainable to our modern era via accessorizing. I am wearing a black chiffon bow belt from H&M to add that definition at the waist and to give the dress some color- blocking and character. I decided to wear my hair in a French braid, which is my go to hairstyle in humid weather and gives the look a fun new edge. I finish off with silver metallic pumps from Karen Millen and black clutch and sunglasses.

Chunky Delicacies

www.stilettosandsubstance.com

Over the past two weeks I came across two eye-catching neutral-toned statement necklace pieces that I thought needed to be photographed together in a duet styled summer shoot. Hence this lovely weekend pre-beach/brunch duet shoot by the pier in Dubai with one of my childhood besties Ines Gameiro.

Here I am wearing a clear crystal floral chunky necklace by Coast that I styled with a simple yet fun layered summer outfit. I layered a nude pink, leveled waistcoat with a zipper trim from Designer Circus over a pleated collar white sleeveless top from H&M. I finished off the look with loose fitting denim shorts and brown structured sunnies by Cole Haan.

Ines is rocking an exquisite feminine floral delicacy from a jewelry line I recently learnt about and quickly treasured – Lenora Dame. This Necklace was composed of grey and brown pastel flowers in combination with pearls, crystals and ribbon. Ines wears the Lenora Dame necklace effortlessly with a simple cheerful little white dress, and accessorizes with bold sunglasses by Michael Kors. Both of us are wearing the same shade of pink lipstick by Mac (up the amp) that fantastically composes a complementing distinctive shade on varying skin tones.

Blue Black Hues

www.stilettosandsubstance.com

The dark color palette of winter can easily take over your wardrobe. Why not brighten it up with a colorful statement coat to throw over the neutral under layers. This double-breasted boxy powder blue 80’s inspired coat from Reiss creates a stimulating color contrast and immediately adds an interesting androgynous factor to the look with the high collar and the bulky lapels.

The neutral under-layering of this look consisted of a color-blocked cashmere turtleneck sweater and my favorite embroidered knit drop crotch pants. The embroidery on the pants and the asymmetrical ivory panel on the sweater are the subtle details that make basic under-layering a little more stimulating.

Why not feel like a champion when rocking shoes that look like they came out of the wardrobe of King Louis XIV and subtly tweaked to fit our current-time shoe silhouettes. A well done job by the “Paris Collection” at H&M! The immaculate construction of these beautiful elongated suede shoes with the bejeweled front buckle detailing plus the comfort factor?!.. I’m sold!

Urban Jungle

www.stilettosandsubstance.com

Summertime in the city calls for easy dressing – light fabrics, a loose fit, and a kaleidoscope of colours form the perfect style trifecta in the warmer months. Throwing an on-trend jungle print into the mix doesn’t hurt either! This casual-luxe ensemble shows how you can effortlessly inject some opulence into your summer daywear.

The oversized vintage silk shirt is the undeniable focal point of this look. Its intricate jungle print, baroque gold detailing, and rich colours catch the eye and transform the shirt from a simple wardrobe basic into an eye-catching statement piece. Instant modifications like buttoning up the shirt, tucking it in to the shorts, and rolling up the sleeves give this oversized piece some much needed shape and structure.

The loose fitting silk safari-esque drawstring shorts with gold accents are the perfect neutral compliment to the vibrant shirt. A velvet navy blue turban and burgundy loafer slippers continue the regal vibe of this look, and a dash of gold accessories finish things off nicely.

Personal Style: Citrus Hues

www.stilettosandsubstance.comSpring brights aren’t just for colour blocking – they can also be incorporated into a monochromatic ensemble for an understated take on colourful dressing. Here, bright citrus hues like lime and yellow are paired with monochromatic black and white for a fresh take on trans-seasonal spring dressing.

This whimsical look was styled around a pair of patterned statement tights. Their intricate pattern attracts the eye and gives the look visual interest, and the lime green accents inspired the outfit’s colour palette.

A lightweight cover-up such as a blazer is a great option for trans-seasonal layering. This white blazer compliments the freshness of the outfit’s lime green elements, and its texture keeps things interesting. The yellow printed blouse underneath gives a complimentary pop of colour and is buttoned up all the way and tucked into the black skirt for a prim and proper feel.

Midi heel shoes are a great option for spring if you like your shoes to be comfortable and wearable.  These lime green suede heels provide a good amount of height but are also comfy enough to walk around in for long periods of time. A quirky chocolate bar bag provides the finishing touch to this whimsical and colourful look.

Personal Style: Reinvention of the LBD

www.stilettosandsubstance.com

The little black dress is a style staple that has been around forever, and for good reason. The style merits of this highly versatile wardrobe essential are endless; it is a piece that can look good on virtually anyone, and it can be transformed instantly with the help of the right styling. Here, a variety of statement pieces were used to create a look that is both chic and youthful.

When it comes to style basics like the LBD, the cut and fit is of paramount importance. This Ted Baker babydoll dress has a superior fit, and has a figure flattering fit-and-flare silhouette that is fitted on top and flared out into a pleated skirt. Its mid-thigh length elongates the leg, and the zipper detail in the back gives it some edge.

The brown and black tights give this look some visual interest by putting an unconventional colour spin on the classic houndstooth print. When it came to accessories, the ladylike look of this outfit called for the addition of something a little more unexpected to keep things interesting and unique. The Perspex neon-orange necklace is the perfect choice as it adds unexpected colour and texture and also channels this season’s futuristic trend.

The outwear you select to layer over your LBD can make or break your look, especially in the colder months. The unusual arm cutouts on this fur cape give it an elegant vintage feel that adds a luxe element to the rest of the look. A royal blue bow belt was added to cinch in the waist and give a fun pop of colour to the outfits predominantly neutral colour palette, the gloves co-ordinate with the earth tones of the outfit, and the classic black pumps echo the black of the dress and keep things simple.
