A Lengthened Melody

DSC01197edited2

This weeks post I went back to basics, keeping my attendance monotone in an elongating all black ensemble. The statement piece transpired via waxed leather-esque sweatpants, accompanied by a not so killer platform heels from Zara. The look was completed with a high neckline and slicked back ponytail, rendering a simplistic lengthened melody.

Cipriani Halloween Party – London Phone Box

www.stilettosandsubstance.com

I got my inspiration to dress up as a ‘London Telephone Box’ thanks to an early inspiration initiated by a big poster of a London double decker bus that is plastered above my bed. The red color palette idea was decided on but then I didn’t want to be a red bus for Halloween. So I went on to think of other things that are red and decided to become London telephone box. Consulting your creative mind light heartedly and colorfully can somehow put together some exciting creative solutions 😉

How I did it was by looking for a shiny red base (dress), which I religiously searched for on the web and of coarse in the end found it at non other than Asos.com. No surprise there, Asos will happen to have a red patent dress just because. Next I was going to create little phone box windows which I did using aluminum tape and white border tape. The telephone sign (with the correct font) and the Queen’s crown were mandatory.

The headpiece and wire necklace accessorizing was an easy last minute combination of Amazon Prime orders, hot glue, and lots of hair pins and insulators. Schiaparelli created the shoe hat and I today was going to have a red phone projecting whimsically and happily off my head.

We headed to the Halloween Party at Cipriani on 42nd street where Italian Dj Marco Carola was going to take our eardrums on an electrifying musical journey, and he did quite that!

Till next time Halloween

Xoxo

The Mustard Man

IMG_3308-0.JPG
I decided to add another feature to my blog where i can instantly share some interesting fashion finds that i encounter on the go. I figured its the best way to really involve my readers first hand with the spontaneous energy of New York City. This post’s interesting fashion encounter was “The Mustard Man”.

Spotted in Chelsea’s art gallery district rocking a monotone outfit composed of varying textures of mustard brown shades. This composition consisted of a tailored loose fit cropped trouser worn effortlessly with a jersey T and a suede bomber jacket.

I am automatically drawn towards the shoes among other details. He is attiring an extravagant pair of statement loafers embroidered with my observation of an eastern ethnic print.

He finishes off the look with a simple brown leather man bag in conjunction with some chilling Ray-Bans and a Fedora hat.

I would like to finish off this post with a quote from the Great Gatsby the entices similar feeling as i do towards a random well dressed stranger ( with methodical expectation that he dresses this spectacularly the remaining 364 days of the year). “Ah” she cried. “You always look so cool”, speaks Daisy Buchanan as she complement Jay Gatsby’s chilling attire.

Chelsea Highline

IMG_3490edited1

This week’s post was taken on-the-go on a walking self tour towards Chelsea and the Highline. It was a beautiful day and my family came to visit me in New York City. The photographer is one of my favorites – Mummy.

Nostalgia – a wistful desire to return in thought or fact to a former place or time. Walking past the beautiful wall art and inspirational words evoking future dreams initiated by childhood innocence was worth capturing and definitely brings me back as I walk by it with my loved ones.

I am wearing my new metallic oxford shoes from Vince Camuto. My outfit consisted of a vintage yellow floral printed button up oversized top paired with my favorite red, waxed Hudson Jeans. I accessorized with both my new prescription wide framed glasses and my new unconventional black sunnies that I purchased from 5 points on a recent trip to Atlanta Georgia. Lastly i am rocking a light weight grey jacket that i bought a while back from Reiss.

I love this photo because it visually captures the essence of the fast paced on-the-go energy of New York City with the echoing mentality that “my time is very precious and I want to make this my decade”.

Along the highline I come across this mural with a sentence written in Arabic with the English translation below “ This book belongs to its owner Fathallah Saad. He bought it with his own money at the beginning of March 1892”. I didn’t understand what it was about, but im sure there’s a story. I wonder what book he bought.

Ice lollies on a sunny pre fall day seem like a good reward after a two hour exploratory walk starting on the east of the island all the way to the Chelsea vicinity and ending up on the highline. Mint cucumber and mango passion fruit- home-made organic and delightful.

A very cool mural placed above a parking garage. Possible thought of a name for it..”The Road to nowhere” aha.

Here my mother the photographer captures my outfit in different settings along the highline. The beauty of this post is its organic feel , the family ambience and our experimenting with visual inspirational settings that came along the way.

Shift Dress Ready

Stilettosandsubstance.com

This week features a day-to-night-look. A simple outfit of the day that can be carried forth to summer night-time endeavors.

I am wearing a purple v-neck kimono-sleeved shift dress from Asos. This piece is an easy comfortable throw on and constitutes a silhouette that is flattering to many different female forms. I accessorize with a chunky necklace that put together a few years back. I bought the fluffy wool pendant from a jewelry booth during London Fashion Weekend and found beads to pair it with from the Boston bead factory.

Simplicity is the key with this look as the dress color is the main visual stimulant. The remaining accessorizing process is remained at a minimal with white a white leather Messenger from Ted Baker and white wedges from Kurt Geiger.

Tie Dye Sunsets and Flatforms

stilettosandsubstance.com

This week’s outfit post emits an element of childhood nostalgia as I dress for an American style family-embraced poolside barbeque away from the city. With vast amount of grass field to play in, childhood acrobatic jumping aspirations come to mind.

I am wearing a sunset tie dye top with magenta and blue hues from Ted Baker. The Ted baker spring/summer sale was ideal to stock up on fun tops and blouses that always come in handy for everyday work/fun attire. The prints say it all and make it easy to pair with casual solids. I pair it with white jeans– an item of clothing I have not owned for many years. Finding the right pair of white jeans may be a difficult process especially for us curvy types. The stretch factor and thickness of white jeans is critical. They ought to be thick enough to avoid looking like Jeggings, and they must have a good stretch factor to mold into le body shape. I found my perfect pair also at the Ted Baker summer sale. I pair it with my current favorite cloud pendant by Kirsteen Stewart that complements the sunset shirt dreamily.

Last but not least- Flatforms are created so usefully for the purpose of achieving extra height in combination with the comfort factor. Flatforms are an acquired taste and may take some of us a while to accept their existence to then possible invest in a pair and stare at them aimlessly in our wardrobe during outfit building. But once that day comes when you throw them on without the dilemma, a milestone is overcome and suddenly they are cute and make you happy.

The Skies Collection

www.stilettosandsubstance.com

This week’s post celebrates one of my favorite hobbies as a cloud enthusiast- sky watching. Cumulus, Stratocumulus, Cumulonimbus and the list continues. The sky has an art of its own and it is rather stimulating to deviate from out daily tasks to give nature’s gigantic cotton balls some undivided attention and appreciation. “ London based Designer Kirsteen Stewart shares my enthusiasm for clouds in her latest “Skies Collection”.

Kirsteen had created rich graphic prints for the “Skies Collection” from pictures she had taken herself of the Scottish skies at sunrise and sunset. She designed a series of structured dresses to flatter the female form. Here I am rocking the Nimbus Dress with a bold monochrome print of the Scottish skies as rain clouds begin to build on the horizon. I styled the Nimbus dress with the Cloud Pendant – also designed by Kirsteen, to play off the theme. The cloud necklace is my latest accessory amusement and had proved to be a very good conversation starter in many of my outings! I finish off my look with a scooped high bun and suede, leather, bow-string court shoes from Zara.

My lovely accomplice Arianna Miskel is rocking the Floccus Dress with a bold print inspired by the Scottish sunset. She accessorizes with the silver Mini Smile Necklace also designed by Kirsteen Stewart. Arianna finishes off the look with the Obsessive Compulsive Lip Tar, Sephora’s latest long lasting lippy.
